Cleaning your air conditioning (AC) machine is important for better cooling, energy efficiency, and healthier air. Here’s a step-by-step guide for cleaning a typical window-type or split-type air conditioner at home.

🧰 What You’ll Need:

  • Screwdriver

  • Vacuum cleaner (with brush attachment)

  • Soft brush or toothbrush

  • Fin comb (optional)

  • Mild soap or detergent

  • Spray bottle or hose (for outdoor unit)

  • Dry cloth or microfiber towel

🧊 For Window-Type AC:

1. Turn off and unplug the unit

Safety first. Always disconnect power before cleaning.

2. Remove and clean the front panel

  • Unscrew or unclip the front grille.

  • Wash it with warm soapy water. Let it dry completely.

3. Clean or replace the air filter

  • Slide out the filter (usually behind the front panel).

  • Wash with soap and water.

  • Dry it fully before reinstalling.

4. Vacuum the evaporator coils (inside coils)

  • Use a soft brush or vacuum brush attachment.

  • Be gentle to avoid bending the aluminum fins.

5. Clean the condenser coils (back of the unit)

  • If accessible, gently vacuum or spray with a hose (only if it’s fully unplugged and outdoors).

6. Drain water from the base (if needed)

  • Some units have a drain hole—clear it of any clogs using a stick or straw.

7. Reassemble and test the unit

❄️ For Split-Type AC (Indoor Unit):

1. Turn off the power at the circuit breaker

Always turn off the breaker before touching the indoor or outdoor unit.

2. Open the front panel

  • Gently lift the panel.

  • Slide or pop out the filters.

3. Wash the filters

  • Use mild soap and water.

  • Dry completely before putting back.

4. Clean the evaporator coil

  • Use a soft brush or coil cleaner spray.

  • You can also use a no-rinse AC coil cleaner spray (available at hardware stores).

5. Wipe the fan blades and panel

  • Use a dry or damp cloth.

  • Be gentle around electronics.

🌬️ For the Outdoor Unit (Condenser):

1. Turn off the power at the breaker

Make sure no electricity is flowing.

2. Remove leaves, dust, or debris

Use a vacuum or your hands.

3. Spray the fins and coils

  • Use a garden hose at low pressure (not a pressure washer).

  • Spray from the inside out to push dirt away.

4. Straighten bent fins (optional)

Use a fin comb to gently straighten them.

🕒 How Often Should You Clean?

  • Air filter: Every 2–4 weeks (or monthly in dusty areas)

  • Full clean: Every 3–6 months

  • Professional deep cleaning: Once a year
